Brain construction goes straight

چکیده

ytoplasmic structures are sites of active mammalian mRNA decay, according to Cougot et al. (page 31). The group had previously identified cytoplasmic foci that included two human mRNA decapping enzymes. They now add subunits of a deadenylase, exonuclease, and possible helicase to the list of proteins found at these sites. After inhibition of a 5 –3 exonuclease, poly(A) RNA accumulates at the same sites, further suggesting that these are locations for active degradation of RNA rather than passive storage centers for degradation factors. The foci almost completely disappear after addition of either translational inhibitors that are known to stabilize RNAs or transcriptional inhibitors that deplete the cytoplasm of all mRNA. Similar structures have been seen in yeast, although these structures were fewer in number and only visible under certain nutrient conditions. Both findings suggest that the cytoplasm is more structured than previously thought. The regulation of foci formation remains a subject for future studies. C RNA to be degraded (red) colocalizes with degradation factors (green) in foci.

Shape Representation by Multiscale Contour Approximation

We present an approach for deriving qualitative descriptions of contours containing structures at different (unknown) scales. The descriptions are in terms of straight a m , curved arcs with sign of curvature, corners, and points delimiting the arcs: inflexion points and transitions from straight to curved. Furthermore, the tangents at these points are derived. The approach is based on the cons...

Approximating a Motorcycle Graph by a Straight Skeleton

We investigate how a straight skeleton can be used to approximate a motorcycle graph. We explain how to construct a planar straight-line graph G such that the straight skeleton of G reveals the motorcycle graph of M , for every given finite set M of motorcycles. An application of our construction is a proof of the Pcompleteness of the construction problem of straight skeletons of planar straigh...

Straight Skeletons for General Polygonal

A novel type of skeleton for general polygonal gures, the straight skeleton S(G) of a planar straight line graph G, is introduced and discussed. Exact bounds on the size of S(G) are derived. The straight line structure of S(G) and its lower combinatorial complexity may make S(G) preferable to the widely used Voronoi diagram (or medial axis) of G in several applications. We explain why S(G) has ...

"Straight back to barbarism": antityphoid inoculation and the Great War, 1914.

On 27 August 1914, just three weeks after the outbreak of the Great War, Sir William Osler, Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford University, wrote a letter to the Times, in which he urged the necessity of compulsorily vaccinating British troops against typhoid. "In war," he pressed, "the microbe kills more than the bullet," and he reminded his readers that more men had died of dysentery and t...
